Healthy Living Tip #19: Turn Off Your Phone At Holiday Meals

The holidays are all about reconnecting with loved ones, celebrating with one another, and being surrounded by friends and family. So why are you constantly checking your phone? Instead, this holiday season, break the habit and turn off your phone.

We all know that it can be seen as rude to use your phone at the dinner table or to ignore others while playing Candy Crush. But, increasingly, more and more of us are breaking this long-standing rule. This act is not only impolite, but also disrupts the entire social dynamic of your holiday gatherings.

Turn Off Your Phone

Beyond how much this habit can ruin your holiday meals, it also comes with another cost: increased EMF exposure.

As we’ve said, time and again, there are two main ways to reduce your exposure to harmful EMF radiation:

  1. Minimize: Minimize your use of your EMF devices such as your cell phones, laptops, Bluetooth and tablets. Use your device as little as possible. Shut it off when not in use, for your safety and the safety of others.
  2. Maximize: You should maximize the distance between your body and EMF-emitting devices when you use them. The farther away, the safer it will be for you.

Now, at SYB we’re not naive. We know that technology is compelling – even addictive. So while these two rules are quite simple, they can appear difficult to follow. We want to check our phones. What’s happening on Facebook? Did we miss an email from our boss? What’s on clearance at Amazon? What did the president tweet?

So we understand that it’s not always easy to turn off your phone – even during meals and family get togethers. However, human interaction is just as important as what you do for work. Your health and happiness will be a lot better off if you learn to shut down your device more often.

So, why not use the holiday season as an opportunity to disconnect, even if just for a few hours at a time. Make a rule not to have your devices at the table. This will encourage you to engage with your loved ones more.

In fact, if you’re hosting a holiday party, you can make a game out of who can stay off their device the longest. Put everyone’s phone in a basket when they arrive – the winner gets a prize.
