EMF Glossary Definition

Electrical Current

“Electrical current” refers to the flow of electric charges (like electrons) through a conductor, such as a wire. It’s similar to how water flows through a pipe. In electrical systems, this flow powers everything from light bulbs to computers.

When electrical current flows, it creates an Electromagnetic Field (EMF). EMFs are invisible areas of energy, often referred to as radiation, that are associated with the use of electrical power and various forms of natural and man-made lighting.

The relationship between EMF and human health has been extensively studied. While the thermal effect (heating effect) of high levels of EMF is well-established – like the warmth you feel from a microwave oven – there’s significant scientific research on the biological effects of EMF levels that are lower than those causing this thermal effect. Thousands of peer-reviewed studies have suggested potential health risks from low-level EMF exposure.

These studies have explored a range of health concerns, including but not limited to:

  • The potential for increased risk of certain types of cancers.
  • Effects on brain activity and sleep patterns.
  • Impacts on child development.
  • Possible association with neurodegenerative diseases.

However, it’s important to note that the scientific community has not reached a consensus on the extent of these risks. Different studies offer varying results, and there’s ongoing debate about the methodology and conclusions drawn in this research area.

Regulatory and health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), continue to review and assess this research. Current public exposure guidelines for EMF (set by international bodies like the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) are based on the thermal effects, but ongoing research may influence future guidelines and standards as our understanding of EMF and its effects continues to evolve.

Given the complexity and evolving nature of this research, it’s recommended to stay informed through credible sources and take balanced precautions, especially in situations of prolonged exposure to EMF sources.
