The number of sources of human-made EMF emissions continues to explode. It’s no longer just cell phones and WiFi. Now we also have wireless thermostats, wireless speakers, smart refrigerators, tons of bluetooth devices— EMF is everywhere. Despite the growing number of sources of EMF, there’s one source of EMF that is likely one of your biggest sources of exposure: keeping your cell phone in your pocket or bra.
And so, there’s one habit that you can adopt that will significantly reduce your cumulative exposure to EMF radiation, and that’s to stop carrying your cell phone in your pocket or bra. Which brings us to SYB Healthy Living Tip #64.
Cell Phones Emit Dangerous EMF Radiation
Cell phones, like all wireless devices, work by transmitting electromagnetic radiation (or EMF).
There are hundreds of high quality, peer-reviewed scientific studies linking exposure to this type of radiation to numerous negative health outcomes, including multiple types of cancer, DNA damage, infertility, and leakage of the blood brain barrier, and can contribute to the development of depression, diabetes and heart irregularities.
The World Health Organization lists this type of radiation as a Class 2B Carcinogen. And in 2018, the US National Toxicology Program’s (NTP) $30M study found “clear evidence” that mobile phone radiation led to an increased rate of cancer and genetic damage in mice.
So yes, exposure to cell phone radiation is a health risk. (And the risks of exposure to your cell phone’s dangerous radiation are separate from the risks that your phone can explode in your pocket.)
That Cell Phone In Your Pocket is Multiple Sources of EMF
One important thing to realize about cell phones is that they are not just one source of EMF radiation.
Each wireless thing your phone does, is a separate source of EMF. So, at first, a cell phone was just for calls.
Then came data and texting.
Then they added WiFi. And then Bluetooth. Then, to support features like Apple Pay, they added NFC (or near-field communication). And now it’s wireless charging.
So your innocent looking phone over there is actually emitting EMF from half a dozen sources, all at once.
And even when you’re not making a call, if your phone is on and not in airplane mode, it’s actively transmitting this type of radiation.
Even the Manufacturers Say It’s Not Safe
Now, when you read this type of information, you may be tempted to second guess the science. “After all,” you might think to yourself, “the wireless companies wouldn’t tell me their phones are safe if they’re not.”
Well, you should take a look at the fine print in your cell phone manual.
A lot of people don’t even realize that cell phone manufacturers warn you not to keep your cell phone in your shirt, pants, skirt or trouser pocket, because if you do, your exposure can exceed FCC guidelines. And when these companies, like Apple, perform tests to determine the SAR of their phones, the phones are held away from the test dummy.
As just one example, the Apple iPhone 7 manual warns users to “carry iPhone at least 5mm away from your body to ensure exposure levels remain at or below the as-tested levels.”
(This is a great example of why you should always read the fine print in your tech manuals.)
FCC Guidelines for Cell Phone Radiation
How can the cell phone companies get away with this? Well, according to FCC guidelines, the “‘body-worn’ configuration should be done with the device in a belt clip or holster”. So the FCC tells manufacturers to test their EMF emissions based on the assumption that people will not carry their phones in their pockets or in their bras!
But, of course, so many of us do. Because it’s so convenient. Many of us don’t even have anywhere else to put our phones.
What You Can Do
Stop Carrying Your Phone in Your Pocket or Bra
The number 1 best way to eliminate the health risks of carrying your phone in your pocket is, unsurprisingly, to stop carrying your phone in your pocket.
So where should men and women carry cell phones? It’s best to carry your phone as far away from you as possible. But even placing your phone in a belt holster, backpack or purse – even just a few millimeters away from your body – is a major improvement.
“When cell phones are on, connected to a wireless network, and placed in a pocket, the radiation is two to seven times higher than if it were placed in a purse or holster,” says Dr. Lily Friedman of Comprehensive Wellness Institute in South Florida.
Even the California Department of Public Health warns consumers not to carry their phones in their pockets.
Use Airplane Mode
Of course, for many of us, we find it difficult (if not impossible) not to carry our phones in our pockets or bras. After all, where else are we going to carry it?
For those of you who need or want to continue carrying your phone directly against your body, there’s another simple solution: turn on airplane mode.
That’s because when your phone is in airplane mode, it isn’t transmitting harmful EMF radiation any longer. As long as your phone is in airplane mode, it’s safe to put it in your pocket.
Use Parts of Airplane Mode
The downside of using airplane mode is, of course, that you can’t receive any calls or texts. And for some of us, that isn’t feasible– perhaps you need to be reachable for work or your family.
While putting your phone in airplane mode is the best protection when carrying your phone, you can still reduce your phone’s radiation emissions and still receive calls.
That’s because airplane mode isn’t all-or-nothing. Pro tip: there are airplane mode options.
For instance, let’s say you need to receive a call, but that’s it. You can disable wifi, bluetooth and cell data. You’ve cut a bunch of your phone’s EMF emissions, and you can still receive calls!
It’s not as effective as disabling all wireless emissions with airplane mode, but it makes a difference.
Use SYB EMF Shielding Products
As I said above, the best protection against the harm of carrying your phone in your pocket or bra is to stop doing it, or to enable airplane mode.
But, for those of you who prefer the convenience of carrying your phones on your body, SYB has several options for EMF protection products that make it safer to carry your phone.
Our SYB 5G Phone Shield is a great option. Just put it in your pocket, between your phone and your body, and it will deflect cell phone radiation away from your body while you carry your phone.
And our SYB Phone Pouch is another great option. Just put your phone in our Pouch, and then carry it in your pocket or on your belt to deflect the cell phone radiation away from your body.
Both our SYB 5G Phone Shield and SYB Phone Pouch have been laboratory tested to protect against 5G frequencies.
For those who want a less visible solution, we offer our SYB Pocket Patch. Just put one of these on any pocket where you carry your phone, to turn that pocket into a powerful cell phone radiation shield.
And, as another option for men, we offer our SYB Boxer Briefs. Made from luxurious fabric containing 42% silver, these briefs are the world’s most protective underwear. They’ll block radiation away from your body, and the silver makes them anti-odor and anti-bacterial.
More Ways to Reduce Your Exposure to Cell Phone Radiation
While carrying your cell phone in your pocket or bra is a huge source of EMF radiation exposure for many people, it’s definitely not the only one.
If you’re interested in other quick, free and easy ways to reduce your exposure to your cell phone’s EMF radiation, check out more of our SYB Healthy Living Tips.
- SYB Healthy Living Tip #78: Don’t sleep with your phone.
To get a better night sleep naturally, and to make a huge dent in your EMF exposure, don’t sleep with your phone in your bedroom.
- SYB Healthy Living Tip #87: Always use speaker phone or a radiation-free headset.
For the same reasons that you shouldn’t carry your phone in your pocket or bra, you also shouldn’t hold it up to your head. The better, safer options are to use a speaker phone or radiation free headset.
