Electric Fields

Share:

Electric fields are produced by voltage (electrical pressure) and exist whenever a device is plugged in, even if turned off. They are measured in volts per meter (V/m). Electric fields can be blocked by walls and most materials, but often concentrate near ungrounded wiring and electronics.

Concern Level Thresholds

Based on Building Biology Institute guidelines (V/m (volts per meter)):

No Concern
< 0.3 V/m
Slight Concern
0.3 – 1.5 V/m
Severe Concern
1.5 – 10 V/m
Extreme Concern
> 10 V/m

Statistical analysis of electromagnetic radiation measurements in the vicinity of GSM/UMTS base station antenna masts.

Koprivica M, Neskovic N, Neskovic A, Paunovic G. · 2014

Researchers measured electromagnetic radiation levels around 664 cell phone base stations in Serbia, focusing particularly on antenna masts. They found that electric field strength never exceeded 10 V/m near the masts, and at distances greater than 50 meters, levels dropped to less than 1-2 V/m. These measurements were all below international safety guidelines established by ICNIRP.

UMTS Base Station-like Exposure, Well-Being, and Cognitive Performance.

Regel SJ et al. · 2006

Swiss researchers exposed 117 people (including those who claimed sensitivity to electromagnetic fields) to cell tower-like radio frequency signals for 45 minutes at different intensities. They found no meaningful effects on well-being or cognitive performance at any exposure level, even among people who believed they were sensitive to EMF. The study contradicted earlier Dutch research that suggested cell tower exposure could affect well-being.

Clastogenic effects of radiofrequency radiations on chromosomes of Tradescantia.

Haider T, Knasmueller S, Kundi M, Haider M · 1994

Researchers exposed Tradescantia plants (commonly used to detect genetic damage) to radio frequency radiation from broadcasting antennas for 30 hours and found significantly increased chromosome damage at all exposure sites near the antennas. The genetic damage was confirmed to be caused by the RF radiation because plants in shielded cages showed normal chromosome levels while those in unshielded cages showed damage.

Exposure to ELF-pulse modulated X band microwaves increases in vitro human astrocytoma cell proliferation.

Pérez-Castejón C et al. · 2009

Spanish researchers exposed human brain cancer cells (astrocytoma) to pulsed microwave radiation at 9.6 GHz for various time periods up to 24 hours. They found that after 24 hours of exposure, the cancer cells showed significantly increased proliferation (growth and division) compared to unexposed cells, even at extremely low power levels. This suggests that microwave radiation may accelerate the growth of existing brain tumors.

Effect of short-term GSM radiation at representative levels in society on a biological model: the ant Myrmica sabuleti

Cammaerts M-C, Vandenbosch GAE, Volski V · 2014

Belgian researchers exposed ant colonies to GSM cell phone radiation at levels legally allowed in Brussels (1.5 V/m) for 10-minute periods and observed their behavior. The ants showed measurable changes in their movement patterns, had trouble following scent trails efficiently, and became less responsive to their alarm pheromones. This suggests that even brief exposures to everyday cell phone radiation levels can disrupt the nervous system functioning of these insects.

Effect of short-term GSM radiation at representative levels in society on a biological model: the ant Myrmica sabuleti.

Cammaerts M-C, Vandenbosch GAE, Volski V. · 2014

Researchers exposed ant colonies to cell phone radiation at levels legally permitted in Brussels (1.5 V/m) for just 10 minutes and observed significant changes in their behavior. The ants showed reduced ability to follow scent trails, decreased orientation toward alarm signals, and altered movement patterns. This matters because ants use similar biological processes to humans for navigation and communication, suggesting that common environmental EMF levels may affect basic biological functions.

Bioassay for assessing cell stress in the vicinity of radio-frequency irradiating antennas

Monselise EB, Levkovitz A, Gottlieb HE, Kost D · 2011

Israeli researchers exposed water plants (duckweed) to radio frequency radiation from AM transmitter antennas for 24 hours and measured cellular stress responses. The plants accumulated alanine, a known stress marker, in direct proportion to the radiation intensity they received. When vitamin C was added, it completely blocked this stress response, suggesting that free radicals (unstable molecules that damage cells) were involved in the process.

Direct current electrical fields induce apoptosis in oral mucosa cancer cells by NADPH oxidase-derived reactive oxygen species

Wartenberg M et al. · 2008

German researchers exposed oral cancer cells to weak electric fields (2-16 volts per meter) for 24 hours. The fields triggered cancer cell death by generating harmful molecules called reactive oxygen species that damaged the cells' internal systems, suggesting potential therapeutic applications for treating cancer.

Reactive oxygen species elevation and recovery in Drosophila bodies and ovaries following short-term and long-term exposure to DECT base EMF

Manta AK, Stravopodis DJ, Papassideri IS, Margaritis LH. · 2014

Researchers exposed fruit flies to cordless phone base station radiation and found cellular damage markers doubled in fly bodies after 6 hours. Female reproductive organs showed even faster responses, with damage markers increasing 2.5 times after just 1 hour of exposure.

Reactive oxygen species elevation and recovery in Drosophila bodies and ovaries following short-term and long-term exposure to DECT base EMF.

Manta AK, Stravopodis DJ, Papassideri IS, Margaritis LH · 2013

Researchers exposed fruit flies to radiation from cordless phone base stations. The flies showed doubled levels of cell-damaging molecules within hours, even at very low radiation levels. This suggests common household wireless devices may cause cellular stress below current safety standards.

Radio-frequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure levels in different European outdoor urban environments in comparison with regulatory limits.

Urbinello D et al. · 2014

Researchers measured cell tower radiation levels in four European cities with different safety rules. Despite varying regulations, actual outdoor exposure was extremely low everywhere - between 0.22 and 0.41 volts per meter - suggesting stricter local limits don't necessarily reduce real-world exposure levels.

Effects of universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) electromagnetic fields on the blood-brain barrier In Vitro.

Franke H et al. · 2005

German researchers tested whether 3G cell phone signals could damage the blood-brain barrier (the protective filter that keeps toxins out of the brain) by exposing pig brain cells to UMTS signals for up to 84 hours. They found no evidence that the radiofrequency radiation affected the barrier's protective function, permeability, or structural proteins. This suggests that 3G signals at typical phone exposure levels may not compromise this critical brain protection system.

Effects of pre- and postnatal exposure to 1880-1900MHz DECT base radiation on development in the rat.

Stasinopoulou M et al. · 2016

Researchers exposed pregnant rats to DECT phone base station radiation (the same frequency as cordless phones) for 12 hours daily during pregnancy and early life. They found increased heart rates in developing embryos, altered birth measurements in newborns, and significant brain cell loss in the hippocampus region of 22-day-old pups. These brain changes occurred whether the animals were exposed only before birth or both before and after birth.
