p25/CDK5 is partially involved in neuronal injury induced by radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure

Zhang Y, She F, Li L, Chen C, Xu S, Luo X, Li M, He M, Yu Z. · 2013

Researchers exposed primary cultured cortical neurons from newborn Sprague-Dawley rats to pulsed 2.45 GHz radiofrequency electromagnetic fields for 10 minutes. Exposure significantly decreased cellular viability and increased apoptotic nuclei, CDK5 activity, the p25 to p35 ratio, and tau phosphorylation at Ser404. CDK5 expression did not change significantly after exposure. A CDK5 inhibitor blocked the exposure-induced decrease in cellular viability and tau hyperphosphorylation but did not significantly block apoptosis.

The alpha band of the resting electroencephalogram under pulsed and continuous radio frequency exposures

Perentos N, Croft RJ, McKenzie RJ, Cosic I · 2013

Seventy-two healthy volunteers underwent eyes-open resting EEG recording during four 20-minute exposure intervals (sham, pulsed modulated RF, continuous RF, and pulsed low frequency) in a counterbalanced, double-blind crossover design. Compared to sham, a suppression of the global alpha band activity was observed under the pulsed modulated RF exposure, and this did not differ from the continuous RF exposure. No effect was seen in the extremely low frequency condition. The results support the view that alpha is altered by RF electromagnetic fields, but suggest that the pulsing nature of the fields is not essential for this effect to occur.

Non-thermal continuous and modulated electromagnetic radiation fields effects on sleep EEG of rats

Mohammed HS, Fahmy HM, Radwah NM, Elsayed AA · 2013

Researchers investigated the effect of chronic low-level non-thermal electromagnetic radiation on sleep EEG in rats. They used two types of radiation fields: 900 MHz unmodulated and 900 MHz modulated at 8 and 16 Hz, with exposure for one month at one hour per day. EEG power spectral analyses revealed that REM sleep was more susceptible to modulated radiofrequency radiation than slow wave sleep. The latency of REM sleep increased due to radiation exposure, indicating a change in the ultradian rhythm of normal sleep cycles. The authors concluded that exposure to electromagnetic radiation in awake animals can alter subsequent sleep structure and suggested cumulative irreversible effects.

Stimulation of the brain with radiofrequency electromagnetic field pulses affects sleep-dependent performance improvement.

Lustenberger C et al. · 2013

Sixteen male subjects completed two experimental nights, one with all-night pulsed radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure at 0.25–0.8 Hz. Sleep efficiency exceeded 90 percent in both conditions. Slow-wave activity increased during pulsed exposure compared to sham toward the end of the sleep period. Spindle activity did not change. Motor sequence task improvement was reduced by 20.1 percent during exposure versus sham.

Studying the protein expression in human B lymphoblastoid cells exposed to 1.8-GHz (GSM) radiofrequency radiation (RFR) with protein microarray.

Zhijian C et al. · 2013

The study used protein microarray to examine protein expression in human B lymphoblastoid cells intermittently exposed to 1.8-GHz GSM radiofrequency radiation at a specific absorption rate of 2.0 W/kg for 24 hours. The analysis identified 27 differentially expressed proteins associated with DNA damage repair, apoptosis, oncogenesis, cell cycle, and proliferation, with a fold change greater than 1.5 and P<0.05. Western blot validation confirmed that RPA32 expression was significantly down-regulated and p73 expression was significantly up-regulated in the exposed group (P<0.05).

Impact of one's own mobile phone in stand-by mode on personal radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure.

Urbinello D, Röösli M. · 2013

Researchers measured uplink exposure from a mobile phone handset during commuting using a randomized cross-over study with three scenarios: a disabled phone, an activated dual-band phone, and a quad-band phone. In the reference scenario, uplink exposure was highest during train rides at 1.19 mW/m2 and lowest during car rides in rural areas at 0.001 mW/m2. In public transports, the impact of one's own mobile phone on personal RF-EMF measurements was not observable due to high background uplink radiation from other people's mobile phones. In a car, uplink exposure with an activated phone was orders of magnitude higher compared with the reference scenario.

Superposition of an incoherent magnetic field inhibited EGF receptor clustering and phosphorylation induced by a 1.8 GHz pulse-modulated radiofrequency radiation.

Sun W, Shen X, Lu D, Lu D, Chiang H · 2013

The radiofrequency radiation induced EGF receptor clustering and enhanced phosphorylation on tyrosine-1173 at the higher absorption rates but not at 0.1 W/kg. A 2 μT incoherent magnetic field alone did not significantly affect receptor clustering or phosphorylation. When applied together, the incoherent magnetic field completely inhibited the radiofrequency radiation effects at 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 W/kg but not at 4.0 W/kg.

Induction of adaptive response in mice exposed to 900 MHz radiofrequency fields: Application of micronucleus assay

Jiang B, Zong C, Zhao H, Ji Y, Tong J, Cao Y · 2013

Adult male ICR mice were pre-exposed to 900 MHz radiofrequency fields for 4 hours per day for 7 days, then given an acute whole-body dose of 3 Gy gamma radiation. The micronucleus assay was used to measure genotoxicity in immature erythrocytes in peripheral blood and bone marrow. Mice exposed to the radiofrequency fields alone showed micronucleus indices similar to unexposed controls, while mice given gamma radiation alone showed a significantly increased micronucleus frequency. Mice pre-exposed to the radiofrequency fields before gamma radiation showed a significant decrease in micronucleus indices compared to those given gamma radiation alone.

Extensive frequency selective measurements of radiofrequency fields in outdoor environments performed with a novel mobile monitoring system.

Estenberg J, Augustsson T. · 2013

Researchers developed a car-based measuring system to estimate outdoor radiofrequency field exposure across rural, urban, and city areas of Sweden. The median power density was 16 µW/m(2) in rural areas, 270 µW/m(2) in urban areas, and 2400 µW/m(2) in city areas. In urban and city areas, base stations for mobile phones were clearly the dominating sources of exposure.

Geospatial modelling of electromagnetic fields from mobile phone base stations.

Beekhuizen J, Vermeulen R, Kromhout H, Bürgi A, Huss A. · 2013

Researchers modelled radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) across Amsterdam using a three-dimensional model called NISMap, then compared the results to actual measurements taken in areas with different built-up characteristics. The modelled values agreed well with measurements, with Spearman correlations of 0.86 for GSM900 and 0.85 for UMTS. The researchers concluded that NISMap provides a reliable way of assessing environmental RF-EMF exposure for epidemiological studies in urban areas.

Levels of electric field strength within the immediate vicinity of FM radio stations in Accra, Ghana.

Azah CK, Amoako JK, Fletcher JJ. · 2013

Researchers surveyed radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation at public access points near FM radio stations in Accra, Ghana. Measurements were taken within a 10 to 200 metre radius of each station's base, at a height of 1.5 metres above the ground. Electric field strength ranged from 5.4E−04 V m−1 at FM station 'O' to 7.4E−08 V m−1 at FM station 'D', and power densities ranged from 2.5E−10 to 1.5E−17 Wm−2. These values were described as far below the reference level set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection and did not pose any known hazard to the inhabitants of Accra.

STUDY OF VARIATIONS OF RADIOFREQUENCY POWER DENSITY FROM MOBILE PHONE BASE STATIONS WITH DISTANCE.

Ayinmode BO, Farai IP. · 2013

Researchers studied how radiofrequency radiation power density varied with distance around mobile phone base stations at ten randomly selected locations in Ibadan, western Nigeria. Measurements were made with a calibrated hand-held spectrum analyser. The result of this study demonstrates that exposure of people to RF radiation from phone base stations in Ibadan city is far less than the recommended limits by international scientific bodies.

Evaluation of the cytogenotoxic damage in immature and mature rats exposed to 900 MHz radio frequency electromagnetic fields.

Atlı Şekeroğlu Z, Akar A, Sekeroğlu V. · 2013

Researchers investigated the cytogenotoxic effects of 900 MHz radiofrequency electromagnetic fields on bone marrow cells of immature and mature rats. Rats in the treatment groups were exposed to RF-EMF for 2 hours per day for 45 days. Significant differences were observed in chromosome aberrations, micronucleus frequency, mitotic index, and ratio of polychromatic erythrocytes in all treatment and recovery groups. A 15-day recovery period after exposure did not reduce the damage to the same extent as the corresponding control groups.

Assessment of outdoor radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure through hotspot localization using kriging-based sequential sampling.

Aerts S et al. · 2013

Researchers proposed a methodology to create heat maps that accurately pinpoint outdoor locations with elevated RF-EMF exposure in an urban region. The method was tested in an urban subarea of Ghent, Belgium with a size of approximately 1 km², using 600 input and 50 validation measurements performed with a broadband probe. Five hotspots were found, with maximum total electric-field strengths ranging from 1.3 to 3.1 V/m, satisfying international reference levels for general public exposure. Radiofrequency radiation from 900 MHz GSM base stations was always dominant, with contributions ranging from 45% to 100%.

Oxidative and genotoxic effects of 900 MHz electromagnetic fields in the earthworm Eisenia fetida.

Tkalec M, Stambuk A, Srut M, Malarić K, Klobučar GI. · 2013

Researchers exposed earthworms (Eisenia fetida) in vivo to 900 MHz radiofrequency electromagnetic fields at field levels of 10, 23, 41 and 120 V m(-1) for 2 hours using a Gigahertz Transversal Electromagnetic (GTEM) cell. All exposure treatments induced significant genotoxic effects in earthworm coelomocytes, as detected by the Comet assay. The results also indicated enhanced catalase and glutathione reductase activity, as well as lipid and protein oxidative damage. Antioxidant responses and the potential for damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA differed depending on field level, field modulation, and duration of exposure.

Exposure to 1800 MHz radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation induces oxidative DNA base damage in a mouse spermatocyte-derived cell line.

Liu C, Duan W, Xu S, Chen C, He M, Zhang L, Yu Z, Zhou Z. · 2013

Researchers exposed a mouse spermatocyte-derived GC-2 cell line to 1800 MHz GSM signals for 24 hours using an intermittent schedule of 5 minutes on and 10 minutes off, at SAR levels of 1 W/kg, 2 W/kg, or 4 W/kg. At a SAR of 4 W/kg, DNA migration in a modified comet assay was significantly increased, and levels of the DNA adduct 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) were also increased. No detectable DNA strand breakage was observed by the alkaline comet assay. The increases in DNA damage were accompanied by increases in reactive oxygen species (ROS), and these effects were mitigated by co-treatment with the antioxidant alpha-tocopherol.

Overproduction of free radical species in embryonal cells exposed to low intensity radiofrequency radiation

Burlaka A et al. · 2013

Researchers exposed Japanese quail embryos in ovo to GSM 900 MHz radiofrequency radiation at 0.25 µW/cm2 for 158 to 360 hours on a discontinuous schedule. The exposure produced a significant persistent overproduction of superoxide and nitrogen oxide in embryo cells throughout the analysis period. Exposed embryo cells also showed significantly increased levels of TBARS and 8-oxo-dG alongside significantly decreased superoxide dismutase and catalase activities.

Effect of 900 MHz radıofrequency radıatıon on oxıdatıve stress in rat brain and serum

Bilgici B, Akar A, Avci B, Tuncel OK · 2013

Researchers exposed rats to a 900 MHz electromagnetic field at a whole body average specific absorption rate of 1.08 W/kg for 1 hour per day for 3 weeks. Malondialdehyde and advanced oxidation protein product levels increased in rat brain tissue after electromagnetic field exposure. Nitric oxide levels in the brain showed no significant difference, but serum nitric oxide increased significantly after exposure, and garlic did not reduce that increase. The researchers also tested orally administered garlic powder at 500 mg/kg/day and found it had a protective effect against the oxidative stress seen in brain tissue.

Immunohistopathologic demonstration of deleterious effects on growing rat testes of radiofrequency waves emitted from conventional Wi-Fi devices

Atasoy HI, Gunal MY, Atasoy P, Elgun S, Bugdayci G · 2013

Researchers exposed male rats to radiofrequency radiation from Wi-Fi devices operating at 2.437 GHz for 24 hours a day for 20 weeks, then examined their testes. The exposed rats showed significant increases in markers indicating DNA damage in the testes compared to controls. Catalase and glutathione peroxidase activity were decreased in the exposed group, which the researchers suggested may have been due to radiofrequency effects on enzyme activity. The researchers said these findings raise questions about the safety of radiofrequency exposure from Wi-Fi Internet access devices for growing organisms of reproductive age, with a potential effect on both fertility and the integrity of germ cells.

Effect of a single 30 min UMTS mobile phone‐like exposure on the thermal pain threshold of young healthy volunteers.

Vecsei Z, Csathó A, Thuróczy G, Hernádi I · 2013

Researchers tested the effects of UMTS RF EMF exposure on the thermal pain threshold of 20 young adult volunteers, measuring responses on the surface of the fingers. The exposure lasted 30 minutes and was applied to the head through a patch antenna, with SAR kept constant at 1.75 W/kg. Thermal pain thresholds were intact, but a reduced desensitization effect between repeated stimulations was observed on the contralateral side during genuine UMTS exposure. Subjective pain ratings were marginally decreased in the genuine exposure condition only.

Effects of chronic exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields on energy balance in developing rats

Pelletier A et al. · 2013

Researchers examined the effects of chronic RF-EMF exposure (900 MHz, 1 V m(-1)) on the main functions involved in body energy homeostasis, including feeding behaviour, sleep, and thermoregulatory processes. Thirteen juvenile male Wistar rats were exposed to continuous RF-EMF for 5 weeks and compared with 11 non-exposed animals. The frequency of rapid eye movement sleep episodes was greater in the exposed group independently of ambient temperature, with increases of 42.1% at 24 °C and 31.6% at 31 °C. Exposure also increased daytime food intake, and the researchers concluded that RF-EMF exposure can induce energy-saving processes without strongly disturbing the overall sleep pattern.

Analysis of emotionality and locomotion in radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation exposed rats.

Narayanan SN et al. · 2013

Researchers exposed male adolescent rats to radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation at 900 MHz from an active mobile phone, then tested their emotionality and locomotion. In the elevated plus maze test, exposed rats showed significantly reduced open-arm entries, time on open arms, and distance on open arms, along with decreased rearing and grooming frequency. Total distance travelled and total arm entries did not differ significantly between exposed and control rats.
