The Protective Effect of Autophagy on DNA Damage in Mouse Spermatocyte-Derived Cells Exposed to 1800 MHz Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields.

Li R et al. · 2018

Researchers exposed mouse sperm cells to cell phone-level radiofrequency radiation (4 W/kg SAR) for 24 hours and found it caused DNA damage. However, the cells activated a protective mechanism called autophagy (cellular self-cleaning) that helped reduce this damage. When researchers blocked this protective response, DNA damage increased significantly.

Probing the Origins of 1,800 MHz Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation Induced Damage in Mouse Immortalized Germ Cells and Spermatozoa in vitro.

Houston BJ, Nixon B, King BV, Aitken RJ, De Iuliis GN. · 2018

Researchers exposed mouse sperm to cell phone radiation (1.8 GHz) for 3-4 hours at low power. The radiation damaged sperm DNA, reduced sperm movement, and created harmful molecules in cell energy centers. This provides biological evidence for how wireless signals might affect male fertility.

Nitric oxide modulates the responses of osteoclast formation to static magnetic fields

Zhang J, Ding C, Meng X, Shang P · 2018

Researchers studied whether nitric oxide modulates the responses of osteoclast formation to static magnetic fields. Field strengths of 500 nT (hypomagnetic field), 0.2 T (moderate static magnetic field), and 16 T (high static magnetic field) were utilized as treatment. At 16 T, osteoclast formation was markedly decreased and nitric oxide synthase activity was enhanced, producing a high level of NO. At 500 nT and 0.2 T, osteoclast formation increased alongside decreased NOS activity and NO production.

Coupling of oxidative stress responses to tricarboxylic acid cycle and prostaglandin E2 alterations in Caenorhabditis elegans under extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field

Sun Y, Shi Z, Wang Y, Tang C, Liao Y, Yang C, Cai P · 2018

Researchers exposed Caenorhabditis elegans to 50 Hz, 3 mT extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields from the egg stage until the fourth larva stage. Reactive oxygen species levels were significantly elevated and total antioxidant capacity was significantly depressed in the exposed worms. The TCA cycle enzyme fumarase showed decreased expression, while arachidonic acid, prostaglandin E2, and prostaglandin E2 synthase all showed increased levels in exposed worms.

Reactive oxygen species mediates 50-Hz magnetic field-induced EGF receptor clustering via acid sphingomyelinase activation.

Sun L, Chen L, Bai L, Xia Y, Yang X, Jiang W, Sun W. · 2018

Researchers exposed human amnion epithelial (FL) cells to a 50-Hz magnetic field and investigated the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in magnetic-field-induced clustering of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). When cells were pretreated with ROS scavengers NAC or PDTC before exposure, both the ROS-related effects and the EGFR clustering were inhibited. The researchers concluded that ROS mediates magnetic-field-induced EGFR clustering via ASMase activation.

Possible role of iron containing proteins in physiological responses of soybean to static magnetic field.

Shokrollahi S, Ghanati F, Sajedi RH, Sharifi M · 2018

Researchers exposed soybean plants to static magnetic fields of 0, 20, and 30 mT for 5 days at 5 hours each day, examining ferrous content and the gene expression and activity of ferritin and catalase. At 20 mT, gene expression of the iron transporter, ferrous content, hydrogen peroxide content, and ferritin and catalase gene expression, content, and activity all decreased. Opposite responses were observed under 30 mT treatments. The researchers also evaluated purified ferritin and apoferritin from horse spleen and catalase from bovine liver under the static magnetic field, finding that tertiary structure, size, and activity were altered, while secondary structure was not influenced.

Protective properties of Myrtus communis extract against oxidative effects of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields on rat plasma and hemoglobin.

Seif F, Bayatiani MR, Ansarihadipour H, Habibi G, Sadelaji S · 2018

Researchers divided adult male rats into three groups: a control group, a group exposed to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELFMF), and a group given Myrtus communis extract before ELFMF exposure. The magnetic field was set at 0.7 mT and 50 Hz, applied for two hours a day for one month. ELFMF exposure decreased plasma antioxidant power and significantly increased markers of oxidative damage, including protein carbonyl, methemoglobin, and hemichrome concentrations. Administration of M. communis extract increased antioxidant power and decreased plasma protein carbonyl, methemoglobin, and hemichrome concentrations.

On the mechanism of the cell cycle control of suspension-cultured tobacco cells after exposure to static magnetic field.

Mohammadi F, Ghanati F, Sharifi M, Chashmi NA · 2018

Exposure to the static magnetic field delayed the G1 to S transition in the cell cycle, accompanied by a decrease in cyclin-dependent kinase A and D-type cyclin. The static magnetic field also increased levels of nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide, and salicylic acid compared to the control group.

Comparative of transcranial magnetic stimulation and other treatments in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

Medina-Fernandez FJ et al. · 2018

Researchers studied the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), natalizumab, dimethyl fumarate, and dexamethasone on Dark Agouti rats given a single dose of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG). MOG triggered a significant increase in clinical score and in levels of lipid peroxides and carbonylated proteins, but reduced the GSH/GSSG ratio in brain, spinal cord and blood. Both TMS and the clinical treatments decreased the changes caused by MOG, with TMS doing so more significantly.

Electromagnetic field exposure (50 Hz) impairs response to noxious heat in American cockroach.

Maliszewska J et al. · 2018

Researchers studied whether a 50 Hz magnetic field affects how American cockroaches respond to noxious heat and alters oxidative stress markers. The exposure was 50 Hz at 7 mT, and the researchers measured how long cockroaches took to escape from high ambient temperature. Escape latency significantly increased after 24 hours, 72 hours, and 7 days of EMF exposure. Malondialdehyde levels increased significantly after 24-hour exposure and remained elevated up to 7 days, while glutathione levels significantly declined after 7 days of exposure.

Expressions of some antioxidant genes in SH-SY5Y cells treated with β-lapachone, morphine and electromagnetic field.

Mahmoudinasab H, Saadat M. · 2018

Researchers measured the effects of morphine and EMF, in combination with β-lapachone, on cell growth inhibition and expression of antioxidant genes in SH-SY5Y cells. The study used 0.50 mT intensity of 50 Hz EMF under two exposure conditions: "15 min field-on/15 min field-off" and "30 min field-on continuously." Under the "15 min field-on/15 min field-off" condition, NQO1 mRNA level decreased while NQO2 expression increased. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that NQO1 mRNA levels were associated positively with β-lapachone and negatively with EMF.

Electromagnetic field could protect SH-SY5Y cells against cisplatin cytotoxicity, but not MCF-7 cells.

Mahmoudinasab H, Saadat M. · 2018

Researchers tested four treatment combinations on MCF-7 and SH-SY5Y cells: cisplatin alone, cisplatin with morin, cisplatin with electromagnetic field, and cisplatin combined with both morin and electromagnetic field. The electromagnetic field was applied at 50 Hz and 0.50 mT using a cycle of 15 minutes field-on followed by 15 minutes field-off. The IC50 value of cisplatin in the cisplatin-plus-morin-plus-EMF treatment was significantly higher than cisplatin alone and the cisplatin-plus-morin treatment in both cell lines. In SH-SY5Y cells, most of the antioxidant genes showed upregulation with the cisplatin-plus-EMF and cisplatin-plus-morin-plus-EMF treatments, while antioxidant gene expression patterns were similar across the four treatments in MCF-7 cells.

The Static Magnetic Field Remotely Boosts the Efficiency of Doxorubicin through Modulating ROS Behaviors

Hajipour Verdom B, Abdolmaleki P, Behmanesh M. · 2018

Researchers investigated the effects of a homogenous static magnetic field (SMF) on doxorubicin-induced toxicity and proliferation rate of cancer cells. SMF alone decreased cell viability and proliferation rate in MCF-7 and HFF cells, similar to doxorubicin alone. The combination of 10 mT SMF and 0.1 µM doxorubicin decreased viability and proliferation of cancer and normal cells in a synergistic manner. The findings suggest that SMF can decrease the required dose of chemotherapy drugs such as doxorubicin and thereby decrease their side effects.

Glinka M et al. · 2018

Researchers assessed the impact of static magnetic fields of different intensities on redox homeostasis in cultures of fibroblasts. Six chambers with field flux densities varying from 0.1 to 0.7 T were used in the research. ATP concentration and the generation of malondialdehyde, a marker of oxidative stress, remained stable, while the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase decreased.

Effects of fifty-hertz electromagnetic fields on granulocytic differentiation of ATRA-treated acute promyelocytic leukemia NB4 cells.

Errico Provenzano A et al. · 2018

Researchers studied the effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields on the differentiation process of acute promyelocytic leukemia NB4 cells that were also treated with ATRA. The NB4 cells used were a cell line established from the bone marrow of a patient affected by acute promyelocytic leukemia. ELF-EMF exposure decreased cellular proliferation potential and helped ATRA-treated NB4 cells to mature. The results indicated that ELF-EMF exposure promotes ATRA-induced granulocytic differentiation of these leukemia cells.

Modulation of rat synaptosomal ATPases and acetylcholinesterase activities induced by chronic exposure to the static magnetic field.

Dinčić M et al. · 2018

Researchers exposed Wistar albino rats to upward- or downward-oriented static magnetic fields for 50 days, then measured enzyme activities and oxidative stress markers in synaptosomes isolated from the whole rat brain. Chronic exposure to 1 mT static magnetic field significantly increased ATPase and acetylcholinesterase activities, and raised malondialdehyde levels in both exposed groups compared to controls. Synaptosomal catalase activity was significantly decreased in the group exposed to the downward-oriented field compared to both the control group and the upward-oriented field group.

Researchers studied the effects of static magnetic fields at 0.8 mT on oxidative stress markers in a restraint stress animal model. Exposure to static magnetic fields over 5 days at 30, 60, and 240 minutes per day decreased NO, MDA, AGEs, and AOPP levels and increased SOD and GSH levels, with the response being time-dependent.

Effects of Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Field on Oxidative Stress in Selected Structures of the Central Nervous System.

Budziosz J et al. · 2018

Researchers exposed male Wistar rats to an electromagnetic field with a frequency of 50 Hz, intensity of 10 kV/m, and magnetic induction of 4.3 pT for 22 hours a day to evaluate oxidative stress in central nervous system structures. Mean malondialdehyde levels and total oxidant status in the CNS structures did not differ significantly between the experimental and control groups. Antioxidant enzyme activities in brain structure homogenates were decreased, with the exception of frontal cortex catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and hippocampal glutathione reductase.

Probabilistic Multiple-Bias Modeling Applied to the Canadian Data From the Interphone Study of Mobile Phone Use and Risk of Glioma, Meningioma, Acoustic Neuroma, and Parotid Gland Tumors.

Momoli F et al. · 2017

Canadian researchers re-analyzed data from the large Interphone study to see if mobile phone use increases brain tumor risk, using advanced statistical methods to correct for study biases. They found that people with the heaviest phone use (more than 558 lifetime hours) had roughly double the risk of developing glioma, the most common malignant brain tumor. Even after accounting for potential errors in how people remembered their phone use and who participated in the study, this increased risk remained significant.

Effects of 1.8 GHz Radiofrequency Fields on the Emotional Behavior and Spatial Memory of Adolescent Mice.

Zhang JP et al. · 2017

Chinese researchers exposed adolescent mice to cell phone frequency radiation (1.8 GHz) for four weeks and tested their behavior and brain function. While the mice showed no changes in depression, memory, or brain structure, they did display increased anxiety-like behavior and had lower levels of key brain chemicals that regulate mood and brain activity. This suggests that radiofrequency exposure during adolescence may specifically affect anxiety responses in the developing brain.

The effects of microwave radiation on rabbit's retina

Talebnejad MR et al. · 2017

Researchers exposed 40 rabbits to cell phone-simulated microwave radiation at two distances (10 cm and 30 cm) for up to 3 days, then examined their retinas one week later. While they found no significant damage to the retina itself, they observed increased blood vessel congestion in the ciliary body (part of the eye that produces fluid) in rabbits exposed to higher radiation doses. The study suggests cell phone radiation may cause subtle eye changes even when major damage isn't apparent.

Influence of radiofrequency-electromagnetic waves from 3rd-generation cellular phones on fertilization and embryo development in mice.

Suzuki S et al. · 2017

Japanese researchers exposed mouse eggs and sperm to 3G cell phone radiation at 2 watts per kilogram for one hour, then studied fertilization rates and early embryo development. They found no significant effects on fertilization success, embryo development, or chromosome damage across different exposure combinations. The researchers noted their exposure level was at least 100 times higher than typical daily human exposure to cell phone radiation.

DNA & Genetic DamageNo Effects Found

RF-EMF exposure at 1800 MHz did not elicit DNA damage or abnormal cellular behaviors in different neurogenic cells.

Su L, Wei X, Xu Z, Chen G · 2017

Researchers exposed three types of brain cells to cell phone radiation (1800 MHz) at high power levels for up to 24 hours to see if it would damage DNA or disrupt normal cell behavior. They found no evidence of DNA breaks, changes in cell growth, or other harmful effects even at radiation levels twice as high as current safety limits. The study suggests that this frequency of radiofrequency radiation may not directly damage brain cells in laboratory conditions.

Reproductive HealthNo Effects Found

No adverse effects detected for simultaneous whole-body exposure to multiple-frequency radiofrequency electromagnetic fields for rats in the intrauterine and pre- and post-weaning periods.

Shirai T et al. · 2017

Researchers exposed pregnant rats and their offspring to eight different wireless communication frequencies (from cell phones to WiFi) for 20 hours daily throughout pregnancy and early development. They found no adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes, offspring development, memory function, or reproductive ability across two generations of rats. This study suggests that simultaneous exposure to multiple wireless frequencies at communication signal levels may not harm reproductive health or early development.
